What is Arthritis?

What is Arthritis? What we now know.

What we now know.

Did you know that there are more than 100 types of arthritis?  Did you know that arthritis is so common that 1 in 4 adults have some type of arthritis?  It’s not just present in adults either, over 300k children in the United States have arthritis.

Arthritis, at its very basic, is the inflammation of a joint.  We now know that this inflammation does not just affect a small portion of the joint but the whole joint.  Due to this inflammation, bones become weaker quicker (osteoporosis), connective tissue (ligaments & tendons) degrade, and the lining of the joint becomes thinner.  People will notice joint pain, stiffness (especially after rest), decreased movement, grinding, swelling, and changes in how the joint looks.  People who have arthritis are more prone to cardiovascular issues and tend to become weaker quicker, leading to walking and balance trouble.

What we know to be the most effective treatment.

Studies show that exercise is the most effective treatment for all types of arthritis.  A study looking at osteoarthritis concluded that: “Exercise can inhibit the inflammatory response by reducing pro-inflammatory factors, thereby delaying the pathological changes of OA.”  Finding the right amount of exercise and which types of exercise is right for each person should be provided by a health care professional like a physical therapist.  Physical therapists are experts in movement and exercise prescriptions for people with health conditions and injuries.

There are many other very effective treatments out there as well.  A new treatment that is showing potential is an injection that works with your immune system to help fight inflammation.  This study is only in the initial stages but shows great potential.  Diet changes that include healthier foods and avoidance of foods that increase inflammation can also be very helpful.  Combating arthritis in many different ways is very effective.  Read our blog article about 3 Ways to Stop Arthritis Pain.
